Fine silk pongee from Niigata with delicate kasuri patterns.
Shiozawa-tsumugi is a hand-woven silk fabric from Shiozawa (now Minami-Uonuma), Niigata Prefecture, with roots in the Nara period (8th century). It features fine kasuri patterns woven with exquisite precision on a plain weave base, producing a subtle, sophisticated textile with a soft hand feel. Along with the related Echigo-jofu and Ojiya-chijimi, it represents the rich textile heritage of the snowy Echigo region where long winters allowed time for meticulous weaving.
