Crinkled ramie cloth from Niigata, prized for summer kimono.
Ojiya-chijimi is a crepe-textured ramie (hemp family) fabric from Ojiya, Niigata Prefecture, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The fabric's distinctive crimped texture is created by twisting weft threads tightly and then shrinking the woven cloth in warm water, producing a cool, airy fabric ideal for summer kimono. The craft developed in the snowy Echigo region, where artisans traditionally bleached the cloth on pristine snow fields using sunlight and ozone.
