Distinctive multi-layered lacquer from Aomori with marbled patterns.
Tsugaru-nuri is a lacquerware craft from Aomori Prefecture, distinguished by its unique and labor-intensive technique of applying dozens of layers of colored lacquer and then polishing them down to reveal intricate, abstract patterns. The four main techniques — kara-nuri, nanako-nuri, monsha-nuri, and nishiki-nuri — each produce distinctive marbled and speckled surface effects. A single piece may require 48 steps and over two months to complete, resulting in exceptionally durable and visually striking objects.
