Japanese quilting/embroidery technique with running stitch patterns.
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese embroidery technique using simple running stitches in white cotton thread on indigo-dyed fabric, originally developed by rural women in northern Japan for practical reinforcement and insulation of worn garments. The repetitive geometric patterns — including persimmon flower, hemp leaf, and ocean wave — transform utilitarian mending into stunning decorative art. Today sashiko has gained worldwide popularity as both a meditative craft practice and a sustainable approach to textile repair.
