Ogawa-washi, a national traditional craft originating from Saitama in the Kanto region, embodies centuries of Japanese papermaking excellence. Its history stretches back over 1300 years, with records indicating its production since the Nara period. This deep historical root underscores its profound cultural significance, having served various purposes from official documents and Buddhist scriptures to everyday necessities, thus preserving ancient techniques and artistic sensibilities through generations. The creation of Ogawa-washi relies exclusively on high-quality kozo (mulberry) fibers, renowned for their exceptional strength and resilience. These meticulously prepared fibers are transformed into paper using the revered Hosokawa-shi technique, a method recognized for its rigorous, entirely hand-made process. This involves carefully beating the kozo fibers to separate them, then forming individual sheets through the nagashi-zuki method. Here, a craftsman repeatedly dips a screen (suketa) into a vat of pulp and water, utilizing the viscous neri plant extract to create a uniform, strong sheet as water drains away, often drawing on the purity of local spring water. What makes Ogawa-washi truly distinctive is its unparalleled strength, remarkable longevity, and unique, warm texture.
