Delicate eggshell porcelain from Nagasaki with intricate openwork designs.
Mikawachi-yaki is a refined porcelain from Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, historically produced under the patronage of the Hirado domain. It is renowned for its exceptionally fine and delicate craftsmanship, including intricate openwork, ultrathin eggshell-thin vessels, and the signature karako (Chinese children at play) motif painted in delicate sometsuke (blue-and-white) style. Once reserved for the feudal lord's gifts and tributes, it represents the pinnacle of Edo-period porcelain artistry.
