Indigo-dyed ikat cotton from Fukuoka with geometric splash patterns.
Kurume-gasuri is an indigo-dyed cotton ikat fabric from Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, developed in the early 19th century by a young girl named Den Inoue. The kasuri (ikat) technique involves tying sections of yarn before dyeing to create geometric and pictorial patterns, resulting in characteristically soft-edged designs in deep indigo and white. Designated a national Important Intangible Cultural Property, Kurume-gasuri remains one of Japan's most beloved folk textiles.
