Carved lacquerware from Kanagawa inspired by Chinese carved lacquer traditions.
Kamakura-bori is a distinctive lacquerware craft from Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, originating in the Kamakura period (13th century) when Zen Buddhist monks carved Chinese-inspired designs into wood before applying layers of lacquer. Unlike most lacquerware that conceals the wood beneath, Kamakura-bori celebrates sculptural carving, with deep relief patterns of peonies, lotus, and scrollwork visible through multiple coats of red and black lacquer. The interplay of carved depth and lacquer luster creates a uniquely three-dimensional aesthetic.
