Hida-shunkei is a transparent lacquerware from Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, originating in the early 17th century. Unlike opaque lacquerware, shunkei-nuri applies translucent golden or amber-toned lacquer over carefully selected wood to showcase the natural grain of hinoki (cypress) and sawara wood. The warm, honey-colored finish deepens with age, and the minimalist aesthetic perfectly complements the refined woodworking traditions of the Hida region.
