Echizen-washi is a traditional Japanese paper (washi) produced in Echizen (now Echizen City), Fukui Prefecture, with a history of over 1,500 years, making it one of Japan's oldest papermaking regions. According to legend, a goddess appeared at a river and taught the villagers the art of papermaking. Echizen-washi is prized for its strength, texture, and beauty, and has been used for official documents, woodblock prints, fusuma (sliding doors), and as the base paper for Japanese banknotes.
