Aizu-nuri is a lacquerware tradition from Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, with over 400 years of history under the patronage of the Aizu domain. Known for its durability and elegant decorative techniques including maki-e (gold sprinkled lacquer) and chinkin (gold-inlaid engraving), Aizu-nuri produces everything from soup bowls and trays to elaborate sake sets. Its robust construction was designed to withstand the harsh winters and daily use of the northern Tohoku region.
